The Final Blogpost

I think it has changed a little in the sense that there are more aspects to effective communication skills than only interpreting nonverbal cues, forging good relationships with people and developing myself as a good listener and speaker which I touched on in my first blogpost. Having effective communication skills also mean that we excel in written communication such as business correspondence and formal reports, enhancing our job search communication like constructing resumes, job application letters and performing at job interviews and strengthening our oral communication like delivering oral presentations.

I think the skills that I have attained in this module are invaluable. For instance, before I attended this module, I did not know how to construct a job application letter nor write a resume. By attending this module, I was able to write both job application letter and resume easily and efficiently. This module also allowed me to perform at job interviews by equipping myself with the questions that an interviewer would ask and let me discovering more about myself by identifying my personal traits, interests and values. By knowing all these things, I would be more confident when I go for any interview and allow me to know what I am looking for in a job. By learning about business correspondence, I would be able to write a business letter and know how to construct a memorandum and appropriate letters in different situations. By learning how to do a formal report in a team, it allowed me to develop empathy, prioritize my time, enhance my communication skills with my team mates and realize the power of teamwork. By learning about how to deliver oral presentations, it equipped me with the skills like persuasive skills, voice and pitch control and to cope with nervousness and stress of presenting in front of an audience.

Therefore, the module gives me an invaluable and unforgettable experience as it has taught me many skills that I do not possess or have not discovered before.

Hi Gary, dear project team mate,

It was great working with you! I agree with you that this module enabled us to discover more about ourselves by identifying our personal traits, interests and values. To be honest, I never seriously checked out what jobs I could do until we had to write our job application letter and resume.
I ploughed through many advertisements and in the process, gained plenty of knowledge about jobs available in the market and expectations. It was also great to have Ms Kim look over our resumes and make many useful comments.

You make a great chairman by the way. I am very grateful for all the times you skipped your other lectures so we could work on the survey report together. Indeed you exercised empathy and cooperation with team mates!

Hello Gary, the skills we learnt in this course are indeed useful and transferrable. These skills and knowledge have also equipped me with a better understanding of bridging the transition between our tertiary environment and the workplace. This has made me more confident and prepared before entering the work force.

Through the numerous group assignments, I too realized the power of team work. As Ms Kim mentioned in the very beginning of the semester, “1 + 1 = 3”. This certainly holds true from my experience in this course where team work was the main push factor in completing our assignments efficiently and effectively.

All he best for your coming exams!

Hi Gary! I believe alot of us tend to neglect the written component of communications. We tend to focus alot more on resolving communication conflicts and verbal communication related aspects. It is good that this course has made us realise the equal importance of effective writing!

Just like you, I enrolled in this course not having the knowledge of drafting my own resume. Perhaps I was too lazy and hence I avoid applying for part time jobs that required me to submit resume. I found it too much of a hassle for a temporary job application. However this course has made me realise the importance of constructing a well written resume. As such, I take pride in drafting my own resume now as it is a document representative of our character. I believe you will share this same sentiment as me.

Lastly, like what you have commented in Chen xin's blog, the duration of this course doesn't matter really. This course has taught us life long skills that require constant practise. With constant practise, we will be able to gain sufficient experience.
Hopefully, we will be able to apply this long life skills when situation calls for.

Lastly I wish you all the best for you upcoming exmaination! Godspeed!

Hi Gary, I think Edwin is right.

All of us totally underestimate the power of having good writing skills. Before this course, my way of writing was to just throw my ideas onto paper and cross my fingers, hoping that the reader didn't realize my grammars and messy organization. I think its one of those skills that one would think that it wasn't important.

Another skill that I tend to ignore was listening. Who would have thought that there was such thing as 'ACTIVE listening' ? As far as I know, listening was already good enough. I'm glad I learnt how to differentiate between active listening and just listening for the sake of it.

Hi Gary, I have also neglected on the importance of effective communication skills in terms of writing in my first post. I guess after all these weeks of practices we have through writing of the group report and all the skill builders we had during class, we indeed have learnt a lot about effective communication.

Before learning about effective communication in job search, I always thought that a job application letter is just a long long letter talking about myself, and resume is just a list of the things I did and achieved since secondary school. From this module, it had really prepared me for job search after graduation, knowing how to write a better resume and letter and even know how to handle difficult questions during job interview.

I guess we all had gained quite a lot from this module.

Hi Gary,

I believe many of us have a slightly changed perception of what effective communication really is. The course has definitely taught us much and this has also enabled us to view effective communication in a different light.

We are now able to view effective communication in a bigger scope in a larger context. We are also able to see how much it actually involves and that our initial definition might have been too narrowed.

It's great to know that someone else share the same sentiments about how much have been taught throughout the course. Hopefully we'd still bear all these skills in mind even after we graduate and even after we've started working. =)

All the best for exams!

Hi Gary,
I guess many of us neglected the aspect of written communication before going through this course. Right now, we have all realised that written communications do come in very handy, especially in terms of job application letters, resumes and report writing.

Like you, and many others, I also did not know the right way of constructing a resume, nor did I realise the importance of a good resume. After the few lessons on 'Job Skills', I am sure we are all equipped with the right skills to construct our personalised and professional looking job application letters and resumes.

Before I end off my comment, I sincerely wish you all the best in life and keep smiling!

Cheers,
Jia Hwa
