Potential Research Project Topics (Blog Post #3)

I would like to do a research on whether the problem of students coming late for classes in NUS is solely due to the frequency of bus 95. I have thought about various other reasons regarding this problem. One could be due to the low frequencies of buses and MRT, another could be due to the attitudes of students or it could be because the lessons are too early for them. However, I’m more interested in researching on whether the frequency of bus number 95 has any reason for students to be late for their classes. Being a student of NUS, traveling from my house to school which includes waiting for bus number 95 is a daily routine. Although there is another alternative, bus number 198, the more convenient bus to science faculty and other faculties is still bus 95. However, there is one main problem: students waiting at the bus stop in Buona Vista will take the bus to school and since the bus is single decked, a lot of the students have to wait for quite some time to get to board another one if they missed it due to too many passengers. Therefore, I am thinking whether this is the main reason that caused students to be late for classes in NUS.

An attitudinal survey is needed because we need to see are there other reasons that contribute to the students being late or is it solely the frequency of bus number 95. Some people are late because they stay quite far away from school while others are late because of their attitudes. For instance, some people feel too lazy to wake up 15 minutes earlier to travel to school. By having concrete evidence through survey, we can know the real reason behind people being late. Then we can come out with solutions to solve the problem such as informing the Land Transport Authority about this problem and see if they can increase the frequency of bus 95 or construct a double-decker bus which can fetch more commuters. It will definitely benefit the students and lecturers. The objective of the report is to inform the LTA about this pressing issue.

Hi Gary, I think your idea is great and has research potential. However why do you restrict it to bus 95? I am late for lessons when classes are back to back because the NUS Shuttle Bus Service can be unpredictable as well. There was once I waited 15 minutes for bus C!

I travel to school by bus 963 and the frequency is every half an hour. So if I miss a bus, I will be severely late. I avoid this problem by leaving my house 1 hour and 45 minutes early.

Is there statistical evidence that most students take bus 95 more than any other bus? Perhaps we should survey what buses most NUS students take and ask if the unpredictable frequency is their reason for lateness.

The topic you have chosen to work on for the research project is a practical and rather feasible subject in my opinion as it may be used to portray out the voices of students travelling to NUS to study.

You have clearly described the problem of students being late for classes and speculated that the frequency of bus 95 may be one of the main culprit. It is also good at the same time that you have also acknowledged other possible reasons for students being late, such as their attitudes and behavior because there is definitely more than one reason as to why students come late for classes. In addition, after stating the various possibilities, you have decided to narrow it down to just whether bus 95 is the key factor for causing this problem of lateness and I think that you have explicitly defined your general research question after brainstorming about the problem.

Like what Yun Nian has stated before which involves changing the subject of the survey to encompass all the different buses that travel to NUS, I think another alternative would be to modify the scope of focus to carry out the survey only on students who take bus 95 to campus because not every one take that particular bus as there are still many different transport options available, like the bus 198 you mentioned. In this way, I think the survey results will be a more accurate and insightful feedback as the study will be more specific to the research question.

Besides targeting the reader audience to only the Land Transport Authority, I think you can also include SBS and SMRT companies as well as the NUS management so that they will be aware of the current situation of poor frequency timings for buses in order for them to actually try to implement strategies to rectify this problem.

I think is the most practical topic ever to choose for the study. I reckon a lot of NUS students are very much affected by this problem and they are probably going to read the outcome of your study. Well, I know I will.

This study is definitely feasible as there is a large pool of people that you can take for your survey. I agree that most of us are probably going to blame bus 95 for being late. Firstly, it doesn't come as regularly as bus 96 and the MRT. Plus almost every Science students take this bus to NUS. So maybe, you can narrow down your targeted pool to just generally the Science students. Then, you don't have to worry about statistical evidence whether NUS students take bus 95 more than any other bus.

Hey Gary!
I think it is pretty torturous to wait for bus 95 and the worse thing is that there will be many people waiting with you! By the time the bus comes, You will have to stand at a strategic place so that you can squeeze up to the bus. How irritating it is when you have a 8am lecture!

This research would benefit those students who need to get to the Science faculty for classes. I personally blame 95 for making me late (Haha..) However, maybe you should consider other factors when it comes to your survey questions. It could be that the late students missed their own feeder bus at home or they could be caught in a jam.

In any case, this research will benefit me ultimately.
I hate 95..

Hi Gary, this topic is so apt for every NUS student, in particular Science students! 95 is the only bus that stops right at the Faculty of Science. A large number of Science students take bus 95 to school, especially those who travel by train.

However, I am not too sure of the frequency of bus 95. Yet, I do understand the feeling of being late due to low bus frequency. Like Yun Nian, I take 963 to school and it really gets on my nerves as the frequency is every 30 minutes. The waiting time of the bus is even longer than the bus ride itself!

Many other factors like traffic conditions at different time of the day can also be the influencing factor of students being late. However, if the frequency of the bus is really low, it plays an essential part in a student's punctuality too.

I think this study is very feasible and your objectives are very clear too. I would like to give you 'thumbs up' for initiating this study! It would really be great if something beneficial can be done.

Cheers!
